Modern Beach House

For this Laguna Beach project the direction of the interior design took its lead from the architecture and site involved. Our design enhances the curved ceilings and roof lines jutting into and out of the space, clearly taking advantage of a stunning view.

Of equal importance was a strong representation of our client's personalities. This hip successful painter and his marketing executive wife desired a house that looked like themselves and reflected their love of the beach, surfing, and a casual lifestyle.

This long narrow central living space with its vast expanse of windows could have been problematic, but the result is both visually and functionally strong.

An office, located on the landing leading to the master bedroom above the central stairwell, overlooks the great room. Highlighted by excellent elevated views of the ocean beyond, it also feels like an integral part of day to day living activities. Built-ins that blend with the oak floors were designed to provide storage for books, 2 printers, office supplies, and files. A bright red bulletin board and apple green chairs add color, function and fun.

The house in general has large walls for an extensive growing art collection that can be enjoyed from all spaces. Funky lighting extends 90" down from the ceiling into the central staircase.

Traffic flows easily from the great room to the kitchen and out onto the patios. The kitchen provides many work spaces and surfaces, including two sinks and two interior eating areas. Much integral storage has been designed to hide what doesn't need to be seen, showcasing what is visually enhancing. Nothing takes away from the main ocean view.

The hanging custom pendant lights provide function and a sense of drama. In the evening they appear like hanging stars from both the interior and exterior views. The look may be random; however each fixture was carefully placed.

Pocket sliding doors and compatible furnishings make exterior patios feel as though they are a true extension of the house. An outdoor fireplace and built-in teak benches make the main patio feel spacious and inviting. This house is fabulous and functional for day to day living and naturally transitions into a stunning place to host a party.
